Our story

We are technologists and entrepreneurs working to transform the life insurance industry and help everyone protect what matters most.
Our founders Michael Konialian and Jack Arenas believe that technology innovation has the potential to dramatically transform how life insurance and other highly underwritten financial products are bought and sold. Having built transformative technology businesses in insurance and finance, they started Modern Life to empower insurance advisors and help everyone protect what matters most.

Life insurance is a consequential and complex purchase which most people only make a few times in their lives. Insurance advisors play an incredibly important role in counseling clients through the purchase process. However, most advisors rely on antiquated legacy systems and manual processes that are slow and unreliable.  At Modern Life, we work to make everyone involved—from client, to advisor, to underwriter—faster, more confident, and more streamlined than ever before.

Michael formerly built and scaled several businesses as part of the leadership team at CoverWallet, a leading InsureTech startup, from its period of hypergrowth through its acquisition by Aon. There, he started and led CoverWallet for Agents, the agent distribution business unit of CoverWallet which rapidly grew to serve thousands of agents. He previously worked at McKinsey & Company, where he served major financial services companies on growth strategy and digital transformation, the U.S. State Department, and NASA. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a B.S. in Engineering from Princeton University.

Jack was formerly the Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer at Petal, a successful fintech consumer credit startup that serves hundreds of thousands of cardholders. There, he was the technology leader from inception through its rapid growth where he built out the technology platform, created their alternative underwriting algorithm, and recruited and led the engineering team. He has previously worked at Amazon, TripleLift, and Goldman Sachs. Jack has a B.S. in Computer Science from UC Berkeley.

Ryan is an investor and the Head of Research at Thrive Capital, a New York based venture capital firm, where he helps lead Thrive’s proactive research efforts and incubation activities. Prior to joining Thrive, Ryan was an investor at Reservoir Capital, where he invested in both public and private markets, as well as helped start operating businesses and other investment firms. Previously, Ryan worked at the hedge fund Perry Capital, where he was a member of the firm’s private equity and distressed credit groups.  He holds an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and a B.A. from the University of Virginia.

Dan Pierson has over 20 years of experience in leadership roles in both life insurance brokerage and technology. He was formerly the Founder and President of LegacyShield, an InsureTech startup that innovated in in-force servicing and whose software is used by thousands of agents daily. He played a leadership role there from inception through its acquisition by SBLI. Prior to that, Dan was Founder and CEO of Independent Life Brokerage, where his team supported hundreds of life insurance advisors on the full client lifecycle, focusing on large and complex cases. He has served on the advisory boards of carriers Transamerica, Principal, and Zurich.
